8/31/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 31st, 2006:

And the slow down begins. :) If past history is any indicator, we'll probably see a slight slow down in CoCo auctions, at least in quantity, for the next week or so. Will it last? (And as always in these cases, here's to hoping I'm wrong. Wouldn't mind one bit.)

Still a few interesting bits up for grabs over the last few days, so here's a roundup.

Vintage color computer Radio Shack TRs 60

Here's a nice looking TRS 60 [sic], er... 80 CoCo 2 in box. Low profile version so probably a 3026 or 3027. Here's a good example how to scope out the good 'uns from the bad 'uns. Those manuals and the packing material look pretty dang good in the photos. While it's certainly not 100% accurate, many times if the packing and manuals look good, the machine will be good. (And now that I say that, 400 duds will turn up all at once. Murphy's Law.) If you need an early CoCo 2, this wouldn't be a bad one to consider.

TRS80 / TRS-80 Cave Walker / The Color Computer Artist

Not terribly common disks up for grabs. Incomplete and untested, unfortunately. Cavewalker was kind of fun and has a ton of levels. If you like the Downland program pak, you'll like Cavewalker. It's one of those frustrating games that you'll play just to beat it out of spite. heh! Color Computer Artist for the CoCo 3 is a graphics editor for the CoCo. Haven't fire it up yet (it's in my "to do" pile), so couldn't say if it's worth it or not.

Oops, Dept.

This one appeared in the TRS-80 listings:

lot 10 VINTAGE GAME CARTRIGES Texas Intstruments Ti-99/

So if you CoCo and TI-99/4A, hey take a look. heh :) Actally, I've always wanted a "Car Wars" style game for the CoCo. Something based on the old Steve Jackson board game. That might be a fun project down the road. hmmm.... That one and the OGRE/GEV wargame they did. Oh, and Illuminati, and... well, you get the idea. Many those old games would be a blast and fairly easy to program on the CoCo, even in BASIC. Ideas, ideas and not enough time to do them. Sigh.

And that's about it. Glen from the CoCo Longue still has stuff up he's unloading, including single issue of The Rainbow and The Rainbow on Disk for collection filling, so be sure to take a look. And there's quite a few used CoCo's up for bid if you need parts or spares, and the prices for the most part are more reasonable than we've seen recently (not all, but at least a few worth considering).

It's always tricky to say if these slower periods will continue for long, so I won't make any serious predictions. These are usually good times to save up for the big hits, and buy the little bits and pieces you need to fill in your collection or fill out the parts box a bit. Until next time...

Capt.

8/27/06 Sales of Note

Sales of note for August 27th, 2006:

View the CoCo Price Guide at http://coco.clubltdstudios.com/reference/pricelist.txt
The CoCo Price Guide FAQ is available at http://coco.clubltdstudios.com/reference/cocopriceguidefaq.html

Haven't done one of these lately, plus a Price Guide update, so let's have a whack.

The Complete Rainbow Guide To OS-9 level 2

A handy resource for the OS-9 or NitrOS-9 user. Also appeared to be at least Good condition, possible better. Sold for a bit less that what we've seen before. Adjusted the price down slightly.

The Offical Basic09 Tour Guide

If you love BASIC, you have to try BASIC09. One of the best BASICs I've ever used, and possible one of the best reasons (arguably) to run OS-9. :) This Tour Guide book, by the CoCo famous Dale Puckett, was sold through Radio Shack. Alas, I've never seen it, but I hear good things. This copy appeared to be in Good to Very Good condition, at least. Sold for a more than previously recorded, so I adjusted the price up a tad.

The OS-9 Guru 1-the facts

First time for this one, and a rare one it is! This is the Microware OS-9 book, apparently. Selling at US$20.50, it is now added to the Price Guide at that price. As always, be aware that data is a bit thin.

Okay, here's a good example of the difficulties in compiling a Price Guide:

Tandy Color Computer Disk Drive FD 502 Dual Drive

This dual FD-502 sold for US$29.00. Now, I haven't actually recorded a duel FD-502 yet, but the single drive version would go for about US$50.00 (roughly). This one, though, came with a flat shipping rate of US$20.00. So we know exactly how much the buyer paid: US$49.00. Considering the overall condition, that would be a respectible, if not particularly noteworthy, price for this drive. But, my policy on recording prices for the Price Guide is not to include shipping as a part of the price listed, since usually you can't tell how much the seller actually paid for the fees. Shipping, however, does play an important part of a buyer's consideration for "total price." Messes things up a bit, doesn't it?

Since I don't record shipping, I have to consider: is the shipping reasonable enough not to be a factor? In otherwords, is the shipping charged (if known) reasonable and expected? In this case, no. That drive, well packed, would ship to most places in the U.S. via Parcel Post for between US$6.00 to US$15.00. Normally, if the shipping is too high, I don't consider the item for the Price Guide, no matter how noteworthy the sale. Even with "handling" fees, this one was a bit high. On the other hand, at $49.00 total, the drive is a good deal for the buyer, and it's obvious that shipping was most likely a factor here. Do I list at US$49.00, US$29.00, somewhere in between? Not at all?

I dunno. The trick is to be as consistant as possible. Factoring in shipping and handling tends to introduce a larger margin for variation. You could say the same thing about NOT including the shipping in the Price when known. But I figure I'd post the thoughts here and see if anyone had any feedback. Should shipping be included in Price Guide prices (it is, clearly, relevent)? Should it be averaged? If so, how do you deal with it if the shipping is unknown? Just list it without and live with the inconsistancy? Factor it in by averaging known previous sales? Whew! I really have no idea. I've been debating this one in my head since the Price Guide started. Thoughts?

The prices in the Price Guide, FWIW, are usually compiled from items whose prices are as "pure" as possible. Pure meaning the shipping and handling is "normal" for the item, and can therefore be removed as a factor. Items that aren't normal, on the other hand, simply aren't considered. That's (one reason) why you'll often see a unique item sell, but it doesn't appear in the Guide. Most often it's because insufficient data about the sale was available to make a determination for the Price Guide. (Of course, sometimes I list them anyway, but I try to warn everyone through these posts when I do.)

Dorsett Courseware - Talk/tutor Programs, Tandy TRS-80

I was kind of surprised at this one. Thought a few more people would bid on it. I doubt you'll see these come up very often. Granted there's a not whole lot of cool factor for them, but at the very least I thought the hardcore collectors would be having a go at it. One did, and won. :) Dorsett did a bunch of these for the CoCo. If I remember correctly, they were like the Disney cassette tapes Tandy did, in that they loaded program bits and graphics from the tape. Then you left the Play button on and it "talked" from a prerecorded voice off the tape. Interspaced between the recorded bits where more program and graphic bits that loaded on cue. This worked pretty well, actually. We use to make music videos this way that loaded graphics from disk on a timed que while the music played on cassette player, so you got sound and graphics at the same time. Fun stuff. Anyhoo, first listing in the Price Guide and split the price for each set.

RADIO SHACK TRS-80 Model (2) COMPUTER +5 GAMES+MANUALS

This one finally sold for a whopping US$76.00! This is the one with the sweet looking paks, including a fully boxed, with instructions, Panic Button. I'll record a sighting for Panic Button, and the rest, but no price. The last time Panic Button sold was sans box for US$10.00. Still, I'm telling ya folks, the CoCo 2 is the thing. :) Oh, and another Typing Tutor sold. Get 'em while there hot! Sheesh.

TRS-80 color computer, multipak speech pad books TRS 80

Actually, I'm a little disappointed on this one. Sold at US$51.00, but most of the items in here were in collectible condition. IMHO, the seller failed to offer the shipping calculator and that had an effect. There's nothing here compelling enough to go nuts over, but it's fine lot of CoCo 2 goodness. I think it could have done better. (shrug)

Assembly Language Graphics for the TRS -80 CoCo

First time in the Price Guide for this one. Not a bad price, but considering it's rarity, I figured higher. At US$16.50, it went well, though.

Rad Warrior for Tandy Color Computer 3 coco 3

General upward price change for this pak, after a (arguable) Good copy sold for a rather large US$12.00! Who knows, maybe the timing was just right. If the history of this pak proves true, the price will adjust back down in couple of sales. But ya never know...

Koronis Rift for Tandy Color Computer 3 Disk coco

Sold for US$20.00 with box and manuals. Very nice! The seller of the previous two includes great pictures and video of the games actually running. And he seems to be getting higher than average prices for the games. Seller's take note! Adjusted the Fine price up a bit on this one, but we'll see where it goes before making any other modifications.

Temple of Rom for Radio Shack Color Computer coco

Wow! Temple of ROM going for over US$18.00? With 16 bids? Yup! This is a neat game, but not sure it's that neat. heh! Adjusted the prices up slightly for this one, but not too crazy. We'll keep an eye on it.

Like New 512K CoCo 3 with CM8 Monitor

From the CoCo Longue auctions, this loaded CoCo 3 went for US$300.00 on Buy It Now. Included duel drives, a PAL upgraded MPI, cassette, OS-9 L2, NitrOS-9, and bunch of other goodies. A good buy for a complete system!

Tandy CM-8 color RGB monitor for COCO 3

Death of the CoCo monitor? Perhaps. The mighty and rare CM-8 sells for a mere US$26.00. With S-Video and VGA connection options available now, are these vintage monitors becoming less in demand? This unit wasn't particularly collectible, but would make a good usable display. Alas, not a lot of interest. Keeping an eye on it.

Huge Lot for Tandy Radio Shack CoC0 3 color computer

Here's a nice big, fat lot of CoCo 3 goodness that went for US$66.00. Good sale, good buy. I was browsing the later issues of Rainbow the other day and it occured to me that the rarest of the rare includes plenty of CoCo 3 stuff. True, some of it can just be downloaded now, but the originals? Few and far between. Even the really rare stuff we do see tends to be for the CoCo 1/2. Where art thou CoCo 3 stuff?

Rainbow magazine (first 12 issues) RARE

First full year of The Rainbow went for US$52.00. Okay, I took a shot at pricing for the early issues of The Rainbow, but keep in mind this is a W.A.G. (Wild Ass Guess) Too rare, too few sales. Have a look and let me know if you think I'm way off, on target, or just loopy for even trying. :)

IMS MM/1 OS9/68k computer. MM-1. Not Tandy Coco 3.

Okay, another W.A.G., but I really wanted to get this one in the Price Guide. :) Maybe if the buyer ever reads this, they'll send in or post some additional information about the configuration. Anyhow, I valued it at $175.00. Again, though, this is a one time sale with no precedent, so mileage may vary significantly on future offerings. (I should come up with a way to mark these in the Price Guide, eh?)

Tandy Cassette Recorder for Color Computer II w/cable!

At US$56.00!!! This one wins the "What the?!?" award for this round. :)

General Adjustments

The price of a CoCo 3 has gone up slightly over the last few months (averaging $33.00 for a Good condition unit by itself). A slight adjust has been made to the 128K CoCo 3 listing. If the 3 continues to sell at $40.00 plus for Good units, I'll do a bigger adjustment shortly. Watch out!

Even with some unusally high priced sales, CoCo 2 prices have only averaged up slightly. A small adjustment has been made to reflect this in the CoCo 2 price listings. As predicted, the asking price for CoCo 2s has dropped a bit, so if you're in the market, it's not a bad time. :)

Capt.

8/27/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 27th, 2006:

Nothing really struck my fancy over the last few days, so no posts. Now there's a couple of items of interest, so here's a nice little round up of the last few days. :)

Tandy TRS-80 Hi - Resolution Joystick Interface

This device is in usable condition, though it's rare enough to look at for adding to the ol' collectible collection. Not a whole lot of programs ended up using this one. Color Max 3 was one. It's competitor, CoCo Max III (and the Max-10 wordprocessor) used a special version of this adaptor that was modified by Colorware to work with those programs. Read: copy protection. So this device (the original Radio Shack version ) won't work with the Colorware products. Can't think of any others...

Several nice looking CoCo mice showed up. These are the black, single red button 26-3025 models:

RADIO SHACK TRS 80 MICRO COMPUTER MOUSE MINT CON & BOX

Appears to be NOS.

Tandy TRS-80 Mouse for Color Computer 26-3025 CoCo NEW!

Not new. But in Good to Very Good.

TANDY COLOR MOUSE Tandy 1000 or Color Computer TRS-8

Another one that appears NOS.

Rainbow On Disk April 1991

Glen, from the CoCo Longue, has several of these Rainbow On Disk packages up for grabs from 1991, and one from 1990. Click on the see seller's other items link for all his currently listed CoCo items.

TRS80 / TRS-80 - 4 x Rainbow Magazine On Disk

Another nice lot of Rainbow on Disk, these from 1987/88

Radio Shack TRS-80 Micro Color Computer (new in box)

I suppose I'll start listing these again. heh! :) Here's a very nice, apparently NOS, MC-10. This machine really is a lot of fun to play with. I definately classify it as a "CoCo-like substance" because it is significantly different than it's bigger brother. But the similarities are enough that it's in the same immediate family.

COLOR COMPUTER DISK SOFTWARE 54 DISK

Here's a bif fat juicy lot of disks for the CoCo! Includes a bunch of copied Rainbow on Disk issues, quite a nice lot of T&D disk issues, original disks for several rarities (a few with their manuals), including the Simply Better wordprocessor, and WordPower 3.1. Most of it is copies, but it looks like there's some gems in there.

TRS-80 Color Computer 2 w/ TP-10 Printer & Cassette

Nice looking CoCo 2 with some nice looking extras.

Disk Drive Watch:

COLOR COMPUTER DISK DRIVE COMPLETE SYSTEM (0,1,2,3)

This one appears to be well loved. It's home built double sided drives with ADOS-3 in one of the controllers. Woo hoo! Very nice. Also includes a copy of PEEKs, POKEs, and EXECs for the CoCo 3.

Tandy Disk Drive FD502 for Color Computer 26-3133 CoCo

A good looking and potentially collectible FD-502 with it's box and manuals.

Mislisted:

Couple of Microdeal casettes:

Cuthbert ... by MicroDeal - Dragon 32 & Tandy Colour 32

Tangle Wood by MicroDeal - Dragon 32 & Tandy Colour 32

Gotta love these things. :)

Some CoCo chips:

Tandy CB Color BASIC ROM IC Chip 8040364B
Tandy ECB Extended Color BASIC ROM IC Chip 8042364A
Tandy Motorola 6809 CPU IC Chip Microprocessor
Tandy Motorola 6847 VDG Video IC Chip Microprocessor
Tandy Motorola 6883 SAM IC Chip Microprocessor
Tandy Motorola 6822 IIA IC Chip Microprocessor

8/23/06 Auctions of Note

I can eat again! "Collector needs food badly!" (Can you tell I've been playing too much of the GLOVE demo... with my own sound effects added, of course. heh!)

Auctions of note for August 23rd, 2006:

3 Tandy Colour Computer games, vgc

Our CoCo collector eye in the U.K., Dragon Dragon, has spotted these rare ones! Rommel's Revenge and Cricket are terribly rare (and Zaxxon is no slouch, either). While not a full endorsement, I will say that some the best software I have for my original CoCo came out of the UK. I just snagged another lot of Microdeal cassettes from an eBayer in the U.K. and am having a blast playing them. These too sound like winners to me! :) (And thanks to Dragon Dragon for the heads up!) Outside of the U.K. you would need to inquire with the seller, of course, as the listing appears to be in country only as stated.

Shanghai Cartridge for the CoCo 3 by Activision

Shanghai for Color Computer 3 coco

Couple of Shanghai paks in the box up for grabs. This is an outstanding CoCo 3 only pak that really shows off an RGB monitor. Particularly if you're bleary eyed from whacking away on a CoCo 1 or 2 on a TV set all day. :) It's particular nice using the Justus VGA adapter, and I can't wait to see it on the Hawksoft S-Video adapter. Was that enough plugs for one post? :) Ahem. Collectibility wise, they both look to be in Good to Very Good, though neither appears to be complete (see link above at The CoCo Hut for the full package contents).

I count at least 5 plugs so far. I'm just in a "spead the good word" mood. :)

Assembly Language Graphics for the TRS -80 CoCo

Here's a rather rare, and splendidly useful, book on assembly language graphics. Very nice looking too!

Disk Drive Watch:

Trs-80 Coco

Not sure what the seller was going for with the listing title, but this drive should work on the CoCo if you add a proper controller and cable. Doesn't look new to me, but the photos aren't that good, so who knows. This was not originally sold as a CoCo drive, probably as an external drive for the white case Model III. As always, inquire before buying.

TRS-80 COLOR COMPUTER CASSETTE CABLE

Note a collectible, per se, but it would be nice to see more of this homemade stuff show up on eBay from time-to-time. These cables work with the cassette recorder, of course, BUT you CAN also use them to record sounds coming out of your CoCo's cassette port as well (which is a cheap and easy way to transfer and archive stuff to your PC as .WAV files), or for hooking up to a CD player. Yup, you can record your CoCo programs to a CD using your PC and play them back on the CD player directly into your CoCo. Haven't tried it myself, but should be pretty simple. Anyhoo, having one or two extras of these cables around is not a bad idea.

VINTAGE TANDY 64K COLOR COMPUTER 2 26-3127B

I'm probably overly fond of this Cat No, because it's the one I had as a lad, but it is a top notch CoCo 2. It does actual lowercase, with the right POKing, as well. Not collectible condition, but a fine CoCo to play on. In fact, I think I'll go dig mine out and play with it. heh! :)

Radio Shack TRS-80 computer recorder printer games

A nice lot at a nice price, particularly with those with youngsters in the house. If you've been holding off buying a CoCo 2 to play with because of the whacky pricing lately, you won't go wrong having a look at this one. The shipping is quite generous! (And the printer included is the CGP-115, and is still a blast to play with, if you can afford the pens.)

TRS-80 color computer, multipak speech pad books TRS 80

Very nice lot, which speaks for itself. Have a look!

TRS-80 - H&E Computronics Magazine - 5 Issues - RARE!!!

A rather lovely lot of this rather rare magazine. Couldn't tell you for sure, though, if it has any CoCo stuff in it.

TANDY TRS-80 64K Color Computer w/ Software Disk Drive

Hefty starting bid, but the shipping is way more than reasonable. Of particular note are the casettes in their original plastic baggies!!! You just don't see that much any more. :)

In the funny department (or really sad, depending on your POV):

ATARI 520ST,COMMODOR 64,

This was listed in the TRS-80 listings (and only in the TRS-80 listings). heh! Actually, those monitors might work on a CoCo. Maybe. And it's a heck of a good price for that 520ST, if you're into that sort of thing. Come to think of it... I don't have a 520ST... hmmm. :) (The Commie would make a nice door stop, or a silly mod/repack project for the twisted CoCoist. Pack it with an MC-10. heh!)

Mislisted:

tandy color computer 3 super pitfall spectaculator lot

The Super Pitfall pak looks complete in the package. Not a terribly common pak to begin with, so worth a look if you need it for the ol' pile o' CoCo swag.

Vintage Tandy Color computer 3 with box manuals game

Another mislisted CoCo 3 that includes the manuals. Worth a look.

Wizards Quest by Microdeal for Dragon 32 & Tandy 32K

Draconian by Microdeal for Tandy TRS-80 32K Colour

Yeah! I get to plug Microdeal cassettes again! :D Wizard's Quest is a pretty neat arcade style game. Enjoyed it and well executed. Draconian I haven't acquired. Yet.

3 SPECTRALIGHT CNC SERVO STEPPER MOTOR & WIRING &TRS-80

For the gadget lover (with money to burn). This should work. Theoretically. :)

8/22/06 Auctions of Note

Well, I've been waylaid by an evil, mutant, sadistic stomach flu the last few days. It tried to kill me, but failed. bwahahaha! That which does not make me stronger... just really pisses me off! heh :) Now that I can stand again (well, sit upright anyhow), let's get back to the CoCo Goodness! I'll try to get as much posted as I can tonight, and finish up the rest tomorrow.

Auctions of note for August 22nd, 2006:

TANDY TRS-80 64K Color Computer w/ Software Disk Drive

If this package is as described, it's acutally worth the US$49.99 starting bid! Potentially in very collectible condition as well. Alas, no pictures to verify condition, so ask questions and bid accordingly.

There's actually several CoCo 2s out there listing without any pictures at all. Just a brief description. Seller's take note: These rarely, if ever, sell. You really, really need to provide at least one nice, clean picture. Weird thing is, one of them (above) is from a Power Seller. They usually know better. Hmmm...

In the haha! Dept. (Or is that haha?)

2 TRS-80 Color Computer Mini Floppy Disk Drive 26-3022

Okay, nice looking 26-3022 set up, but almost US$75.00 with the "flat" shipping? Ouch. Hey, if sells it'll make a new Price Guide listing. :)

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?Color Computer 3

Rare software alert here. Appears to be complete as well! Also a fun game, particularly for the younger set. My daughter and I play this one a lot. My version, though, is a bit different. It ahs a 1988 World Almanac, a different catalog, and the screen colors are different than what's shown in this ad. It was probably updated each year it was in production, so collectors take note: There ARE different editions of this program! (Pictured at left: an alternate package contents of Where in the World...)

Rainbow on Disk FEB88, AUG 88, DEC88 AND JULY 91 coco

Fiiiiive Golden DIIIISKS! Here's five good looking copies of The Rainbow Magazine on disk from 1988 and one for 91. Good stuff.

1980 Tandy PC printer software joystick modem and more

Outstanding! The catch: The shipping. Be sure to ask. Otherwise, we may have the deal of the month here. Lots of original box stuff here. Obviously a well spoiled CoCo and definately worth looking at.

Dorsett Courseware - Talk/tutor Programs, Tandy TRS-80

Well, this is exceedingly rare! Anyone remember the ads for these? Yeah, I skipped over them, too. I bet a lot of people did, making this even rarer. :)

8/21/06 - Auctions of Note

Browsing thru eBay tonight I ran across a couple of interesting auctions:

Here's an early Coco1 with an early Coco2 keyboard, with tons of tagalongs!!!

Left Label Coco1 w/Coco2 keyboard

Folks, this one looks like it has it all in 2, 35+lbs boxes of goodies, not to mention the shipping to go along with it. I often wonder about big lots like this. I've seen a few sell and a few not sell and later broken up and sold individually. Well, he certainly has a lot of goodies and softs in this one...

kb8sfc aka Cocoman is at it again with four issues of Rainbow on disk. I've won a few of his auctions... great guy to deal with!!! Link to his whole listing...

Here's a non-working early Coco2 seller says it has a voltage problem... this would be a good one to try to convert to DC or just use the keyboard for your Grey...

It seems like Coco auctions are gaining a little steam. The one I was interested in (but not enough I guess), that had the Atari joystick adapter, a 3022 disk setup and some cables and manuals that Cris pointed out last week, went for a decent price, for the buyer anyway. There have been a few I would use for projects and some for collecting. Overall a good mix the last few days or so. There were a few more on there that are worthy of mention, but, I'm not here to steal the good Captian's thunder...

Thought for the day... when life throws lemons, throw them back even harder...

Later,
Brian

8/18/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions fo note for August 18th, 2006:

I'm going to attempt to do a Price Guide update tomorrow, but no promises... :P

While there's certainly been a few super collectible items pop up of late, right now the collectible market seems to be for those looking to a) fill in holes in what they've got, and b) folks starting out and looking for stuff to play with. While some of the hardcore collectors might lament this phase of the market, it's a great time for the CoCo collector scene in general. This is the type of market where new collectors, those interested for the first time and those returning to the fold, can get hooked on the CoCo all over again. If you run into one of these folks out on the 'net, encourage them! :)

Some software bits (from cocoman.org):

Sub Battle Simulator for Tandy Color Computer 3 coco

One of my very favorite CoCo games, Sub Battle Simulator from Epyx! I'm not a particularly nautical person. My seafaring experience comes from my father, who instilled in me a love to great sailing ships and models. The rest comes from reading the occasional sea faring adventure book (just finished reading "Pirates! In An Adventure With Ahab," by Gideon DeFoe, which is the funniest pirate book... ever) and admiration for the whole affair.

This game, however, got me hooked on submarines! I played this game for days on end. It's real time (okay, there's an accelerator key) and still an excellent tactical simulator today. Not as fancy as some of the newer sub sims, but definately worth a look for the novice. Requires the patience and fortitude of a... well... sub commander! Definately not an action game. And here it is, complete and ready to go for the CoCo sub pilot in all of us! Definately woth a look.

The Microscopic Mission for Color Computer 3 disk coco

If I remember correctly, this is another fun game for the CoCo 3. Been years since I played it. The copy I have is sealed and put away, so I couldn't say for certain what's suppose to be included. Hey, it's got the disk (shown working) and the manual!

Koronis Rift for Tandy Color Computer 3 Disk coco

This one I didn't ever play, but the copy looks good and is shown working, so worth a look if you don't have it. The copy I have, alas, is dead as a doornail. :/

Mislisted:

VINTAGE TANDY COLOR COMPUTER 64K SOFTWARE WINNIE/POOH
VINTAGE TANDY COLOR COMPUTER 64K SOFTWARE MICKEY MOUSE
VINTAGE TANDY COLOR COMPUTER 64K SOFTWARE DONALD DUCK

These three, all from the same seller, appear to be in at least Good to Very Good condition, for collectible purposes. They're also loads of fun for the youngs ones. While the old tape-based disney games are fun, with pretty decent voice acting, they are horrible slow. These disk-based games are a bit quicker and more interactive. Fun stuff!

TANDY COLOR COMPUTER 3 128K WITH 2 GAME CARTHRIDGES.

Another mislisted CoCo 3 at a good starting bid. The CoCo 3 appears to be clean and was tested working. Those two educational software packages, if complete, are worth a look as well.

Cris

What is collectible about a CoCo...?

My 17 year old daughter asked me this the other night when I started composing my first post for the CoCo Collector, and I had to stop and think about it. Cris and I haven't discussed our views on this a whole lot and I suppose we could have dissimilar views of what a 'collectible' item might be. Ultimately, I think each person may have slightly different views of this. For myself, I have a few units I leave covered on a shelf and only get out occasionally. These are my collectible units. I am not lucky enough to have a nice CoCo1, 2 or 3 in a box. But I DO have a CoCo1, 2 and 3, actually several of each. I do have an FD-502 in a box, that I will not touch.

For me, if there is something I do not have, but would like to have, it qualifies as collectible. If it's nice enough and shows little signs of wear, then I'll put it up and not use it much. I always buy 'well worn' stuff for everyday use. If I get the chance to grab an item in a box with all documentaion I'll do that, but, I do not see that as a requirement for MY purposes. Others may be die hard collectors and demand 'complete' items and, as such pass on the item I would jump at. Again, it all boils down to personal preference since these 8-bitters aren't worth a whole lot to anybody 'cept us.

Well, I just realized I stated my rational for what I buy, but, I didn' answer my original question. What's collectible about a CoCo? The fact that we Coconutz find them interesting and we like them. For many of us, this little gem was our first, and as they say, you always remember your first.. car, girl/boyfriend, house, computer, whatever.

That said, the following item is one I do NOT consider to be a collectible item at all. In fact, it qualifies for:

'Off the deep end' auction of the day...

Back in February when I got back into the CoCo community, I went to Radio Shack to get a tape deck that could be used with my CoCos I had purchased. The price was $42.95 for the tape deck... WITHOUT the A/C cable. That was another $9.99. To say my blood was boiling would be an understatement. I had about $200 of stuff I put back on the shelf, went home, got on the Bay and got one for $18.00, which included shipping. And then I see an auction like this:

New TRS-80 Computer Cassette

Friends, I have NO problem with someone trying to make some money on stuff they've got and wish to get rid of, but, seriously, this kind of auction is nothing short of asinine. If you MUST absolutely have to have a NIB cassette recorder, I guess this may be your auction...

Till next time,

Brian

8/16/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 16th, 2006:

First, a big welcome to CoCoist random_rodder, AKA Brian! Rodder is joining us to provide addition commentary on CoCo collecting, particularly from a more "users" point of view. This should bring some fresh insight into The CoCo Collector, make it more enjoyable for all readers, and I couldn't be more pleased he's agreed to join in. And while you're out and about and of a mind for a CoCo, check out his personal blog at http://cocom3repack.blogspot.com/ where he's detailing his CoCo 3 repack project. This is shaping up to be one wickedest looking CoCos I've ever seen. :)

As we go along, we may add more CoCo folks to the contributor list. The more POV we can get, the better!

Seller of note:

kb8sfc

This seller has a variety of packs in various "use" conditions, some possibly collectible in the Good range. In the book business we call these "reading copies." :) Still the selection is nice and worth a look if you need any of these paks for playing or archiving.

Hidden in the lot:

Vintage Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer 2 & Games

This auction has a nice treasure or two in it. Particularly of note is the complete Color Cube pak with original blister, manual, keyboard overlay, and foldable helper cube! Collectible? Indeed! Seriously rare item there! While the blister is yellowing (they do that), the contents appear to be pretty cherry. There's a few other nice looking, though more common, items in the lot, as well as some extras (including the the CoCo itself) for spares or playing with.

MC-10:

Radio Shack TRS-80 Micro Color Computer- Boxed

Okay, mint/near mint MC-10s have been plentiful lately, but this one has such a nice looking box, I just had to list it. :)

Mysteria meat:

Radio Shack TRS-80 Books, Mini Disk Reader, Other..

Talk about vague auctions! At least theres photos of this pile o' CoCo stuff. Take a good look at the the black box near the center of the first photo. The one with the cables coming out the back. Appears to be a joystick converter? Interesting... Might make an interesting grab bag lot, if you're in the mood. :)

Mislisted:

Vintage Tandy Disk Drive FD 501 for CoCo L@@K Buy Me!!

Nice looking FD-501 with cable and controller. These don't come up much, so definately worth a look. And the price is most definitely right!

Vintage Tandy Multi-Pak Interface for CoCo C@@L Buy Me!

And from the same seller, a mislisted 26-3124 MPI. Again, at this price, it's worth a look, even if you're just needing a spare or one to restore.

TANDY COLOR COMPUTER DISK DRIVE FD 501 CARTRIDGE

Not particularly collectible, unless you're looking to fill out a drive set up you're piecing together. This controller is a good choice for using, though, so if you need one... well, here ya go!

8/14/06 - My first post and decent Coco3 Auction

Howdy, all!! random_rodder (a.k.a. Brian) here. Cris was kind enough to ask me to make occasional comments and observations about the world of Coco Collecting. I do not have a whole lot news wise, but there is one auction today on eBay that looks to be worth keeping track of for collectability...

Huge Lot of Coco3 Software

I would ask for a shipping quote directly, though.

Overall recently, with a few notable exceptions, noteworthy Coco items seem to have slowed down a bit. The MM/1 is an interesting auction (hope CaptCPU wins, I cannot afford to bid..). And I have seen what appears, at least in my opinion, to be an overall decrease in 'collectable' items. Plenty of useable stuff, though. If you're looking for project material, this seems to be a good time. An example :

Claims to be a 'Well Loved Coco3'

If well loved means 'seen a lot of use, that would be the ticket. This one would make great repack material.

Till next time, later

Brian

8/13/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 13th, 2006:

From the WOOHOO Deptartment, Again!

Rainbow magazine (first 12 issues) RARE

Yup, that's right. The first 12 in super nice and super rare condition. The gentleman selling them is a new CoCoist who's just starting to play with a CoCo 3. Welcome aboard, Kevin, and thanks for putting up such a great auctions! :)

There's also a couple of CoCo 3s up in the TRS-80 listings. Not particularly collectible condition, but if you need one for use, hope in there and snag 'em.

This is pretty funny:

Vintage TRS-80 Micro Color Computer

Read the description. 2 points for whoever finds the "what's wrong with this listing" first. :)

8/11/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 11th, 2006

See, I skip a day on eBay and something fabulous shows up. Maybe I should skip more days... hmmm... :)

From the HOOWEE Dept.

IMS MM/1 OS9/68k computer. MM-1. Not Tandy Coco 3.

This is the famous Motorla 68000-based computer from Interactive Media Systems that was to replace the CoCo 3 after Tandy dropped the ball. Well, one of the systems that was slated to replace the CoCo, anyhow.

Rare? Oh, you betcha. I remember agonizing in 1990 over this machine, the Tomcat, or the new Intel 80286-based Tandy 1000 TL/2. It was this or the PC world, and I ended up getting the TL/2. Anyhoo... :)

The MM/1 uses the OS-9/68K operating system and can even use CoCo joysticks, monitors, and drives according to the ads. The ads also say that Personal Computing recently reported that one in four MS-DOS users would be jumping ship to UNIX-based operating systems within a couple of years. Okay, so that didn't quite work out (grin), but it is a really cool machine and this one appears to have all sorts of goodies. Definately a hardcore collector item. They don't get much more drool worthy than this. :)

Os-9 and CoCo Books:

Complete Rainbow Guide to OS-9 Level II Tandy Coco 3

The Complete Rainbow Guide to OS-9 Tandy Coco 3

Tandy Coco 3 service manual RS # 26-3334

Nice copies in the Good to Very Good range, judging from the photos, possible higher grade. All are quite relevant and usable, as well.

Disk Drive Watch:

RadioShack trs-80 computer disk drive system

Nice looking vertical drive (26-3122, most likely) with cable and controller. Untested, but worth a look it you need one.

5.25 Floppy Drive System for TRS-80

Not a Tandy-made drive, but the Tandon TM-100 is a solid disk drive that will work quite nicely. Comes with controller and cable, and if you're looking for a drive for your CoCo, the price looks right.

Capt.

8/9/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of Note for August 9th, 2006:

I just didn't see anything I got really excited about the last couple of days, so no posts. But now there is, on several fronts! :)

Tetris for Radio Shack / Tandy Color Computer coco

Nice Tetris pak in potentially collectible condition. This is one of the paks I play all the time on Ramona. Not a bad version at all and, as a duel mode pak, plays on the 1/2 and 3. This seller even has pictures and video of it playing in both modes.

OOO! OOOO! WOAH! WOW WEE! Dept.

RADIO SHACK TRS-80 Model (2) COMPUTER W/MANUALS&GAMES

Okay, this guy (probably unknowingly) has something in this lot that is almost worth the nutty starting bid price. Can you spot the super rare item in this listing? heh!

The paks, of course, appear to be gorgeous. None of the paks listed are seen very often in this condition. The ultra rarity, though, is the Panic Button pak. Never seen it in this condition (and honestly, only ever seen two). Dino Wars and Moster Maze are no slouches, in this grade, in the rarity department either, of course. The 26-3136 CoCo 2 and manuals look pretty good, too. Too bad the starting bid is wacky.

(That's one of the auctions where I have to stop myself and ask, "If I had the money, would I be stupid enough to bid on that?!?" And then I have to sheepishly add, "Yeah." heh!)

Tandy Color Computer Speech/Sound cartridge 26-3144 new

The last time we saw this one listed in this condition it set a record at US$182.50. Any takers? :)

News: Lonnie Falk Passes Away

Cross poster from CoCo News blog:

Late mourning here. I hadn't heard the news for most of July, but must say it was a shock to learn a few days ago that Lonnie had passed away on June 30th of a massive heart attack after minor galbladder surgery. And yes, I'll use the familar there, because he, and his publication, were such a close part of my life as a teenager. So, I've been trying to figure out what to write here in the blog, because I suppose something should be written here. Perhaps some fond memories of plowing through issue after issue of Rainbow, or typing in listings endlessly in front of the green screen, or drooling over the ads, and on and on. But I honestly can't think of anything that would say enough. Perhaps just a "thank you" will do.

If anyone else would like to post a few words, please feel free. All comments will be approved, as always.

Angel's Luck,
Capt.

8/5/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 5th, 2006:

Just a few items grabbing attention at the moment, but worth listing. I should also note that in the TRS-80 listings on eBay, there are several CoCo 2s showing at much more reasonable prices. While I haven't seen a particularly collectible machine, all would be good work horses, or perhaps a restoration or mod project.

It occurs to me, also, that I've never posted the link to the TRS-80 listings... Most readers probably won't need it, but for completeness I'll try to add it to the sidebar.

Vintage Computing Products > TRS-80 (sorted All Active, Newest Listed)

Disk Drive Watch:

2 TRS-80 Color Computer Mini Floppy Disk Drive 26-3022

Appears to be a nice duel drive 26-3022/23 system with cable, controller and manual. Would be a nice duel system, specially for a grey, but would work with any CoCo. These drives are fairly rare, as well, so a 22/23 combo, complete could be collectible.

Rare Alert!:

A Full Turn of the Screw" Book Rainbow Tandy Coco 3

Tony DeStanfano's collection of Turn of the Screw projects from The Rainbow. Oh man, this is a good one, and it appears to be in great condition.

Some paks:

Kb8sfc

This fellow has some potentially collectible paks up for bid. I'd ask about combined shipping and try to win multiples, though. If you're in the market for 'em...

And some rather rare tapes:

bird-cage

I've bought from bird-cage before and never gone wrong. He's got some rather rare British tapes up for grabs that are well worth a look. I've been nothing but pleased with the Microdeal casettes. Plus he offers a full refund on anything found faulty. Good stuff!

Angel's Luck,
Capt.

Comment: The Sandman Cometh

Too sleepy and worn out to post :) But there's some groovy stuff in the TRS-80 listings and a few nice tid bits elsewhere. Will post in detail tomorrow (don't have to work late), but be sure to have a look.

8/1/06 Auctions of Note

Auctions of note for August 1, 2006:

I wasn't able to get a post up last night (no technical problems, at least!) due to this little thing I like to do sometimes called "sleep." Granted it is rare, but must be done occasionally or I start hallucinating. I was browsing the eBay listing and CoCo Man was sitting there next to me pointing out interesting items and drinking coffee. Well, I was drinking coffee, he just kept typing POKE 65495,0 into his keyboard, but it's the same thing.

Anyhoo, I figured right about then it was time to go to bed. :)

So here's some items of note from yesterday. Plenty of action in the TRS-80 listings. If you've just bought a CoCo and want stuff for it, now is a good time. Many sellers have noted the recent activity and are jumping in to cash in. This is good because it's an excellent opportunity to grab some great CoCo swag! Arrrrr!

TRS-80 Micro Computer System-Complete!

Mentioned this one earlier and with about 7 hours to go, looks like it's going to sell for at least US$100.00. Pretty darn rare CoCo, but worth it? Perhaps. In this condition, this particular cat no doesn't come too often. Mine is better. :P Although mine doesn't have the quick reference card (so I pilfered it from a different CoCo). As said, this model hasn't sold for this much before, so it'll go in the notes, but probably won't affect the price in the Price Guide any unless it sells higher a couple of more times.

If you're jonesing to bid on a Color Computer 2 system, may I suggest:

Radio Shack TSR-80 Color Computer

Now here's a complete CoCo 2 setup with all the trimmings, sidedishes, dessert and a cup of coffee and after dinner mint to boot! Slap a drive on this one and you're good to go. The price is right, the shipping is more than reasonable. Hell, if I can come with the cash I may bid on it myself and there's not a damn thing in there I need. heh! A seriously good lot. Obviously can't vouch, but it looks tasty.

Super Pitfall for color computer 3 by Activision
Predator for Color Computer 3 coco

Some rare paks in nice condition (a bit yellowed) for the collector. (There's a GFL football pak too, but it sucks, so... :P But if you need it, check this seller). Oh, he's got Shanghai up there too, which most definately does not suck.

Little update on this one with about 4 days to go:

Tandy Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer 2 Joystick MINT

Bidding has begun on this one. A very nice lot, but... note to sellers: just add the work MINT (put a breath mint in there somewhere to keep it honest) to the auction listing and let the silliness comence. Sigh... Let's hope this one sells on its merits (which are fine) and not on it's auction title.

Angel's Luck,
Capt.
